Xiaomi Redmi 3S Smart Phone

Xiaomi has made quite a name for itself in the Indian smartphone market by offering affordable yet feature loaded devices. The company’s first smartphone in India – Redmi 1S, grabbed a lot of eyeballs with its combination of low price and decent specifications.
And with the recent launch of the Redmi 3S (Prime), it seems that the Chinese smartphone maker is planning to woo the budget-conscious Indian smartphone buyers all over again.

Bearing a price tag of Rs 8,999 (although there’s a cheaper version as well, priced at Rs 6,999), the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime has been launched as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative. So can the Redmi 3S recreate the magic for Xiaomi all over again? We used the device for a few days, and here’s our full review.

  • Design and display

Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime’s looks and design mirror that of the company’s Redmi Note 3 device. However, the smaller size of Redmi 3S Prime makes it more compact and easier to use with one hand.

The phone sports a metallic unibody design that makes it look and feel much better than what its price may suggest. The back panel has a matte finish and round edges make for a comfortable and non-slippery grip in the hand. The volume rocker and power button are placed on the right, while the hybrid dual-sim card tray is on the left.

The front panel is largely dominated by a 5-inch HD display, and has three capacitive keys at the bottom edge. The top edge houses a 3.5mm audio jack along with an IR blaster for controlling TVs and other appliances. The micro USB charging port is placed at the bottom. As for the rear panel, it’s home to a 13MP primary camera with LED flash, as well as a fingerprint sensor.

All in all, the overall design of the Redmi 3S is pretty good, especially given its price.

720×1280 pixel resolution. It’s a pretty good display with appreciable viewing angles. Even though the resolution is a bit low, overall pixel density is good enough due to the small screen size.

The display is fairly visible under bright sunlight, and the phone also has a setting to tweak the screen colours, giving users the ability to switch between warm and natural colour tones.

The only problem we found with the Redmi 3S Prime’s panel is that it is quite glossy and prone to fingerprint and smudges.

  • Performance and camera

Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime is powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core ,Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor paired with 3GB, of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage, (the non-prime version has 16GB of storage, with 2GB of RAM). The smartphone also supports memory cards of up to 256GB in size.

During our time with the device, the Redmi 3S Prime delivered a really smooth performance with no visible lag. Despite the small screen size, gaming and media consumption were enjoyable. We played games like Asphalt 8, Mini Militia and the phone handled them very well.

That said, the Redmi 3S did get a little hot during extended gaming sessions.

Apart from that, multitasking was also fun. The phone managed to run multiple apps and switch between them without suffering from any performance drain.

Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime sports a massive 4,100mAh battery, which easily lasted us up to two days with moderate use. The good battery life can also be attributed to factors like small screen size and low resolution of the display.

As for the software, Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow topped with the company’s MIUI 7.5 UI layer. The interface itself is pretty clean and user friendly. However, there is no app drawer and all apps are placed on multiple home-screens.

MIUI is very colourful and offers nicely designed themes, app icons and wallpapers. The device offers some interesting modes such as a Lite Mode, which enables a simple mode with bigger icons and fewer features. There are also other modes, such as Child and Guest, which can be used to restrict access to selected apps.

Redmi 3S Prime has an IR blaster which can be used to control home appliances such as TV and ACs with ease. The pre-installed ‘Mi remote app enables users to add multiple remote controls for different appliances and use them from the phone itself.

Xiaomi Redmi 3S is equipped with a 13MP rear camera with dual LED flash and a 5MP front camera for selfies. During our testing, we found camera performance of the device to be really good.

The camera is pretty fast and has a user-friendly interface. Swiping to the right shows all the filters, while swiping to the left shows all the modes such as panorama, beautify and manual. Below the different modes is the option for camera settings, where it’s possible to change things like camera shutter sound, save location and picture quality.
