Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s Bantamweight queen Miesha Tate nearly missed Friday’s (July 8, 2016) weigh ins for UFC 200.
Unlike anything seen before during UFC’s newly adopted early weigh-in schedule, “Cupcake” literally tipped the scale at 10:00 a.m. PT. A minute later and her title defense opposite Amanda Nunes at UFC 200 tomorrow (Sat., July 9, 2016) would have been cancelled, as well as Tate’s 135-pound belt being stripped.
This would have been crushing news considering Tate vs Nunes was recently moved to the main event spot after Jon Jones was forced out of UFC 200 due to a failed out-of-competition test under United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) rule.
She doesn’t like waking up super early and they have a two hour window from 8:00-10:00 am for weigh-ins, so we decided to sleep a little more and weigh-in at 10:00,” said Tate’s boyfriend, Bryan Caraway, in a recent interview with Bloody Elbow. “Plus, we figured everyone else would be done by then. Her weight was moving a little slower than usual and our scale ended up being a little bit heavier than the official scale.”
Tate’s head coach, Robert Follis, downplayed the incident in a recent interview with SB Nation’s Submission Radio (shown below).
We don’t like wasting time,” said Folis, who praised the new early weigh-in procedure. “You manage that commotion. This isn’t the first time we’ve been close with fighters. It happens. Cutting weight is not a science — it’s an art. Sometimes things change a little bit. It took a little bit longer to get it off, but we knew we were going to get it off. We went in and got the job done, and here we are, we’re fighting for the title. Now it’s all done.”
“It was just a little bit tougher than we we’re used to. It wasn’t outrageous, it just took a little bit longer than we’re used to. Her body wasn’t letting the water go as well as it normally does. But it wasn’t a big deal, either.”
Thank goodness this didn’t go the way it looked like it was heading. Tate weighed in at 134.5 pounds, but did have to strip down in order to make the Bantamweight benchmark.
UFC 200 will astonishingly go on as planned as the massive PPV dodged it’s first bullet.
