Tokyo A 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook Tokyo and large ares of eastern Japan Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The quake hit at 1:24 pm with its epicentre at a relatively shallow depth of 40 kilometres in Ibaraki, northeast of the capital, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. No damage or injuries were immediately reported as buildings in Tokyo were shaken by the jolt. Shinkansen bullet train services were temporarily suspended in the region, while no abnormality was monitored at nuclear power facilities in Tokai, Ibaraki prefecture, officials and local media said. Japan sits at the junction of four tectonic plates and experiences a number of relatively violent quakes every year, but rigid building codes and strict enforcement mean even powerful tremors frequently do little damage.

Tokai NPP Operation Suspended in Japan


The operation of Tokai NPP Nuclear Power Plant was suspended on Sunday after an earthquake hit the Ibaraki Prefecture of Japan, media reported.MOSCOW Earlier in the day, Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported that a 5.0-magnitude earthquake has occurred in the Ibaraki Prefecture, near the capital city of Tokyo.

According to the NHK broadcaster, 2.0-magnitude aftershocks were recorded near the Tokai NNP.The media noted that the operation of the plant had been suspended to check the state of nuclear reactors. There were no reports on failure.Japan is a seismically active region. In March 2011, a 9.0-magnitude offshore earthquake triggered a 46-foot tsunami that hit Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power, leading to the leakage of radioactive materials and the shutdown of the plant. The accident is considered to be the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

No Tsunami Warning Issued
