Rio Olympic 2016 Tennis All Star Cast Name at Olympic Games

Top five men’s and women’s players, including defending champions Andy Murray and Serena Williams, among names who will compete for Olympic medals

An all-star cast – including defending men’s and women’s singles champions Andy Murray and Serena Williams – has been announced for the tennis tournaments at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games this August. The provisional list revealed on Thursday (30 June) by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) features the world’s top five male and female players, including star names such are Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka. Sixty-four players of each gender will contest the singles tournaments. Players were selected according to the world rankings on 6 June, plus two invited competitors in both events. There is a limit of four singles players per gender per country.

Also announced were the entries for the men’s and women’s doubles tournaments, with the American duos of brothers Bob and Mike Bryan and sisters Venus and Serena Williams set to defend their Olympic titles. Thirty-two teams will contest both the men’s and women’s doubles, with entries based on the world rankings. Nations were able to nominate up to two doubles teams per event. Entries for the mixed doubles will be confirmed in Rio during the Olympic tennis competition, from those players already participating in singles or doubles, with a maximum of two teams per country.

ITF president David Haggerty said: “We are delighted to welcome another outstanding field to the Olympic tennis event. Since the return of tennis to the Olympics in 1988, the event has continued to grow at each Games, with the current generation of players embracing this unique opportunity in our sport. We expect that the competition in each discipline will be fierce, and look forward to some memorable matches.” The draw will be held at the Olympic Tennis Centre on 4 August at 11am local time, the day before the opening ceremony. The Rio 2016 tennis tournaments will take place at the Olympic Tennis Centre on 6-14 August. Check out the men’s and women’s rankings.
