Maharishi Patanjali is the ‘father of Yoga’ who compiled 195 Yoga Sutras that became the foundation of Yoga philosophy. The commentary on these sutras is called Bhasya. The core essence of Patanjali is the eightfold path of Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga) that focusses upon healthy living through Yoga.
Born in Calcutta in 1863, Swami Vivekananda showed a desire to unravel the spiritual and realize God even when he was a child. This is why he chose Ramakrishna as his Guru because he was sure that Ramakrishna would be able to demonstrate for him the reality of God. Ramakrishna introduced him to Advaita Vedanta and also told him that all religions are true. However, the best form of worship is service to man. The credit of introducing Vedanata and yoga to Europe and America goes to Swami Vivekananda. He raised Hinduism to the pedestal of a world religion by introducing it at the Parliament of World’s Religions at Chicago in 1893 where he also gave an inspiring speech and called the people of America his brothers and sisters. Vivekananda also raised interfaith awareness. He founded the Ramkrishna Mission and Math.
Baba Ramdev should be credited for his exemplary work of creating awareness about Yoga across commoners around the world. Baba Ramdev specializes in different forms of pranayama which is said to cure many diseases and ailments including facilitating weight loss and lifestyle related disorders. Baba Ramdev’s pranayama modules are quite popular as yoga for weight loss. He influences Yoga practice at home by watching Yoga programmes on television, thus, taking the practice to almost every house urban and rural. Baba Ramdev was born in Haryana in 1965 and established the Patanjali Yogpeeth and Centre of Yoga awareness at Haridwar. This spiritual guru also set up a factory to manufacture various Ayurvedic medicines and products. Baba Ramdev is said to have been influenced by Aurobindo Ghose’s booklet Yogik Sadhna, which led to his deep affection for yoga and meditation in the caves of Himalaya.

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi asked the world leaders to adopt an International Yoga Day, saying that by changing lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Addressing the 193-member UN General Assembly in United Nations. Modi said “Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day,” Noting that Yoga is “an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition”, he said: “It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”

IF YOU want to do yoga under the light of full moon, just drop at Parade Ground at Sector 17 on June 11 at 8 pm. In the run-up to International Yoga Day on June 21, the Chandigarh administration will organise a one-hour long yoga session in the moonlight as part of a four-day yoga fest.
The session will be open for the general public. Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Kriti Garg, nodal officer of the yoga fest, said the session would be held by a Dubai-based expert, who has been holding such sessions in different countries.
The venue will be illuminated with candles only.

The yoga fest will begin on June 9 with an event of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at Parade Ground. A 3D multimedia show will be organised on June 10 at Sukhna Lake. The fest will conclude with an event of yoga guru Ramdev on June 12. June 5 is the last date for registration.
“Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Ramdev will be delivering talks and will not do yoga,” said Kirti Garg. ”
Besides, a three-day yoga academic conclave will also be held.
The Ministry of Ayush will fund the main event on which around Rs 8 crore is expected to be spent. The administration has raised funds for the different activities scheduled to be held during Yoga Fest through sponsorships.
UT adviser Parimal Rai Wednesday held a review meeting in which officials of Chandigarh administration, armed forces, Punjab and Haryana governments were present. Rai asked the officials to provide a list of those who will take part in the main event to be held at Capitol Complex by June 6 so that a layout plan can be prepared.
